As a retired member, I was intrigued by the large 30 on the cover of September鈥檚 BSj and turned to the editorial for an explanation.
The 鈥渇ledgling profession of building services engineers鈥, as you put, was going strong in 1816 when George and James Haden founded their company in Trowbridge. It became recognised and regulated in 1897 by the formation of the Institution of Heating and Ventilating Engineers and it was this body that merged with the Illuminating Engineering Society (formed in 1909) to become the CIBSE, not your Heating and Ventilating Society!
It is a great shame that a journal with BSj鈥檚 reputation should be so slapdash and discourteous to so many members of the institution it represents and I sincerely hope that I will never have to write to you in this vein again.
